Tantara is the K-drama many fans have waited on for almost two years. It started life as a working title called Show Business, and then it went quiet. Now Song Hye-kyo and Gong Yoo finally have a date, and the drama has a new name that even some Korean viewers stop to think about.
If you want to plan your December watchlist, you need three things: the exact release date, who plays whom, and what the story is about without spoilers. This Tantara K-drama guide gives you all three, using only what Netflix has published. It also explains the title and the real 1960s to 1980s music world the series is set in.
Tantara premieres on Friday, December 11, 2026, only on Netflix. Song Hye-kyo plays Min-ja and Gong Yoo plays her childhood friend Dong-gu, with Kim Seol-hyun and Cha Seung-won in key roles. Netflix has not announced the episode count or whether all episodes drop at once.

When Tantara comes out on Netflix
Netflix announced the date on its official newsroom on October 22, 2026, in a post titled “Song Hye-kyo and GONG YOO Chase Glittering Dreams in Netflix Series Tantara”. The post says the series is coming December 11, exclusively on Netflix. It closes with a clear line: Tantara premieres Friday, December 11, only on Netflix. You will not need a second streaming service to watch it.
Netflix has not said how many episodes Tantara has. It also has not said whether the season arrives in one drop or in weekly parts. The Tantara title page on Netflix already exists, lists the show as a 2026 drama and shows a 19+ rating in South Korea. Ratings differ by country, so check the page from your own account.
Tantara K-drama cast and characters
Netflix named the main cast in two announcements. The first came on February 10, 2025, when the show was still called Show Business (WT). The second, on October 22, 2026, repeated the four leads and added new character details. The table below uses Netflix’s official English spellings, which can differ from fan sites.
| Actor | Character | What Netflix says about the role |
|---|---|---|
| Song Hye-kyo | Min-ja | Enters the music business after an impoverished childhood in which she took any job to get by |
| Gong Yoo | Dong-gu | Min-ja’s childhood friend, reckless and unpredictable, who fights alongside her to protect her dreams |
| Kim Seol-hyun | Min-hui | A bold talent with a captivating voice who becomes their very first artist |
| Cha Seung-won | Seok Gil-yeo | The era’s top hitmaker, capable of turning rookies into megastars |
| Lee Hanee | Yang-ja | Min-ja’s mother and an aspiring singer (named in the 2025 announcement and on the title page) |
Two details worth noticing in the cast list
Netflix’s 2025 post described Min-hui as someone who “has held a love-hate relationship with Min-ja since childhood.” The 2026 post adds that she becomes Min-ja and Dong-gu’s first artist. That mix of old rivalry and business partnership is the main tension Netflix chose to promote.
Lee Hanee appears in the 2025 casting announcement as Yang-ja and in the cast list on the Netflix title page. Her name is not in the October 22 date announcement, which only mentions the four leads. That is normal for a short date post, and it does not mean her role was cut.

What Tantara is about, without spoilers
Netflix describes the setting as “the gritty and intense backdrop of the Korean entertainment industry from the 1960s to the 1980s.” The series follows people who had little but dreamed of glittering success and gave everything to get it. The Netflix title page sums it up in one line: in years of crackdowns and fear, Korea’s show world kept the lights on and the dream alive. This is a story about the business side of music, not only about singers on stage.
The date poster gives a little more. According to Netflix, it shows Min-ja and Dong-gu rising from nightclub staff to rookie talent managers, with Min-hui singing alongside Seok Gil-yeo on the saxophone. Netflix has not published episode titles or synopses yet. Anything more detailed you read online is a guess until Netflix posts it.
What does Tantara mean?
Tantara comes from the Korean word 딴따라 (ttanttara). South Korea’s National Institute of Korean Language defines it in its Basic Korean Dictionary as a disparaging word for an entertainer or performer. The title is a slightly rude word for the very people the show is about.
The show was announced in February 2025 as Show Business (WT), where WT means working title. By Netflix’s January 2026 slate post, it was already listed as Tantara. Netflix has not explained the change in its announcements, so we will not guess at the reason.
The real 1960s to 1980s music world behind Tantara
The drama is fiction, but its era is real history. The Encyclopedia of Korean Culture, published by the Academy of Korean Studies, says that after the Korean War, nightclub stages for the US Eighth Army and new broadcasters became major workplaces for Korean musicians. Its entry on Korean rock says rock music entered Korea through Eighth Army clubs in the late 1960s. Guitarist Shin Joong-hyun, who came out of that scene, is called the founding figure of Korean rock.
Censorship grew at the same time. The encyclopedia’s entry on Korean popular songs says a broadcasting ethics committee started work in 1962 and an arts and culture ethics committee in 1966, which created the legal basis for banning many songs in the late 1960s.
The 1975 crackdown on pop music
The year 1975 hit musicians hardest. The same entry says a marijuana scandal that year led to many singers, including Shin Joong-hyun and Kim Chu-ja, being jailed or barred from working. The Korean rock entry calls the 1975 measures to “purify” performances and songs the peak of censorship against popular music.
Why the 1980s matter too
The same encyclopedia entry says television entered the full color era in the 1980s, which made the visual side of pop music much more important. Dance music grew from the mid-1980s in that new TV environment. Tantara’s time frame ends right as music becomes something people watch as well as hear. Netflix has not said which real events, if any, appear in the plot.
The team behind Tantara
Tantara is written by Noh Hee-gyoung, the official Netflix spelling of the writer also searched as Noh Hee-kyung. Netflix credits her with Our Blues and It’s Okay, That’s Love. Song Hye-kyo already led one of her series, That Winter, the Wind Blows, in 2013, according to Netflix’s own listing. Tantara reunites Song Hye-kyo with Noh Hee-gyoung thirteen years later.
The director is Lee Yoon-jung, whom Netflix credits with The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince. That 2007 series starred a young Gong Yoo, so Tantara also brings him back to a director from early in his career. The Netflix title page lists both Noh Hee-gyoung and Lee Yoon-jung as the show’s creators.
How to get ready before December 11
The easiest warm-up is a Noh Hee-gyoung drama. Our Blues is a 20-episode tvN series about people living and working on Jeju Island, and Netflix’s page shows Cha Seung-won in its cast as well. Our Blues is the best single preview of the writer’s style, because it follows many characters at once, much as Tantara seems to.
If you want more shows arriving before the end of the year, our guide to upcoming Korean dramas for the rest of 2026 lists what else is scheduled. If you like stories about music and musicians, Four Hands Two Sonatas is another recent option. Gong Yoo fans who never saw his most famous fantasy role can check our Goblin where-to-watch guide, since that one is not on Netflix in most regions.
